Uses
Amlode-AT is prescribed for hypertension that is not adequately controlled on a single agent, and for patients whose hypertension is accompanied by angina pectoris, where combined therapy is considered appropriate by the treating physician. It is a prescription-only medicine.
How It Works
Amlodipine relaxes and widens blood vessels by blocking the entry of calcium into vascular smooth muscle, which reduces peripheral resistance. Atenolol acts selectively on beta-1 receptors in the heart, reducing heart rate and cardiac workload. Together the two components lower blood pressure through complementary mechanisms and help reduce the frequency of anginal episodes.
Possible Side Effects
Reported effects may include ankle swelling, flushing, headache, dizziness, fatigue, cold hands and feet, and a slowed heart rate. Most are mild and settle with continued therapy, but persistent or troublesome symptoms should be reported to the treating physician.
Precautions
Not suitable for patients with asthma or chronic obstructive airway disease, second- or third-degree heart block, severe bradycardia or uncompensated heart failure. Treatment should not be stopped abruptly, as sudden withdrawal of a beta-blocker can worsen angina. Caution is advised in diabetes, since beta-blockers may mask the warning signs of low blood sugar. Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
